The peculiarity of Twombly’s style lies in the chaotic application of lettering, lines, and scratches to canvas. He used the loose manner of Abstract Expressionism, but without heroic pretensions or universal goals. Cy Twombly became the third contemporary artist in history whose work is on permanent display in the Louvre. The artist died of cancer on July 5, 2011 at the age of 83. Prizes that the artist received: 1987 – Rubens Prize. 1996 – Imperial Prize of Japan. 2001 – Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale. 2010 – Order of the Legion of Honor.
