Korean-Canadian artist Hanna Lee Joshi
And in Vancouver, Vancouver-based artist Hannah Lee Joshi creates impersonal and vivid paintings of women. The vibrant colors are different from the corporeal in favor of what Joshi calls “the more otherworldly aspect of my woman.”….. This is a return to the world of the inner god and an exploration of the idea of ephemeral spirits that are embodied in appearances. Joshi draws their enlarged, curved bodies and limbs in vivid colors. And he denies the tradition of the nude figure. All of the paintings are self-portraits. They include the physical, the mental and the spiritual.
It’s my way of coming to terms with the fact that I have to be in some place in society or in everyday life. My work ranges from exploring a sense of being within social constraints or limitations created by me. to depicting a constant desire for freedom. It’s a therapeutic rethinking of how women’s bodies are portrayed, gradually breaking down internal misogyny or any notions of what a woman should be or how she behaves. It happens because I constantly have to analyze myself. – She tells me in an interview.
