Sculptures of Travelers by Bruno Catalano
The streets of Marseille are festooned with sculptures called “Voyageurs” or “Travelers”.
In the first photograph, Van Gogh is holding a luggage bag. Like the other voyageurs, it almost looks as if he has risen from the depths of the sea to journey to the city.
A sculpture like this makes one think about the meaning of life, about the hopes and dreams people have, and about the actions they perform in their daily lives. Every person portrayed by the artist is missing part of the body.
It is unclear why the author chose to represent human nature in this way. We can only assume he did so to illustrate the emptiness within each of us, which we must necessarily fulfill on our journey to self-understanding.
