Six years after the discharge of a monumental compendium of Dutch birds, the writer and naturalist Jan Christiaan Sepp (1739-1811) shifted his focus from avians to geology. In 1776, he issued Marmor Soorten, or The E book of Marble, a hanging catalog of scientific illustrations and annotations that includes 570 varieties of the prized stone. This primary tome was based mostly on analysis printed by the German engraver Adam Ludwig Wirsing and launched in 11 volumes that offered the beautiful, crystallized samples in beautiful hues, requiring 100 coloration plates to print.
