On this lesson you’ll discover ways to draw a chook utilizing oil pastels.

Tips on how to Draw a Fowl

Today we are going to draw a beautiful, bright bird, the kingfisher. It’s a shame it’s so rarely seen in person, but at least it will be on paper. We are drawing with oil pastels.

Total Time: 30 minutes

Step 1 – u003cstrongu003eHow to Draw a Birdu003c/strongu003e

We mark the sheet approximately in the middle. The height is almost equal to the width (a little less). Mark the beak, a kingfisher it is long, a little less than half the width.

Step 2 – u003cstrongu003eHow to Draw a Birdu003c/strongu003e

And we make such a simple, almost nonsensical sketch. Simplify the bird as much as possible, the rule is to work for garlic, even for a man. The oval of the head in the middle (the height takes a third of the marked vertical). Beak goes into the head (bleeding sounds). The oval goes into a long triangle at the bottom of the head. In the larger half we sketch an oval, at an angle. With one half (where the chest is) larger, more convex. And a triangle of a tail at the bottom.

Step 3 – u003cstrongu003eHow to Draw a Birdu003c/strongu003e

Connecting. The back part of our head is almost square, the angle is almost the same as the angle of the body. And in front, we make a fairly sharp transition. On the top of the beak we make an arc, like a bump. Connect beak to head. Now the wing. Oval with protrusions feathers.

Step 4 – u003cstrongu003eHow to Draw a Birdu003c/strongu003e

At the bottom of the triangle. And we divide it into feathers.

Step 5 – u003cstrongu003eHow to Draw a Birdu003c/strongu003e

On the upper part of the wing the feathers are at one angle and larger, and on the lower triangle smaller. And at a different angle.

Step 6 – u003cstrongu003eHow to Draw a Birdu003c/strongu003e

I add another row of feathers in the middle of the wing.

Step 7 – u003cstrongu003eHow to Draw a Birdu003c/strongu003e

On the head we mark the eye. It’s big enough. A pumpkin seed – an oval and a little pointed to the edges. And the rim around it. We outline for convenience the structure of feathers on the head – scales. And mark the main color spots. They are concentrated and us near the eye, in shape – triangles with jagged edges.

Step 8 – u003cstrongu003eHow to Draw a Birdu003c/strongu003e

Let’s draw a schematic paws.

Step 9

Let’s start dialing in the color. Let’s start with the beak. We’ll use white crayon for the background. Then we take ochre and make a spot in the middle.

Step 10

Then we take black and paint over everything, leaving only two small highlights near the head and at the tip of the beak. Near the beak we make brown spots and to the eye we bring a spot. Scales. Mix peach (or ochre) and white scales. The head is also made with scales, white and blue.

Step 11

We add red and orange scales to our peach blotch and a brown stain.

Step 12

We paint over the eye. Make a black background (better to mix with brown, the difference is almost imperceptible, but perceived not just a deaf black better, livelier). Make the top right of the glare. And the same white outline rim.

Step 13

Fill the head with color. To make it look livelier, add some green scales. And also darken the head with blue, purple and black scales. Randomly, but… Near the eye is the darkest place, a little lighter to the back of the head, and the top of the head is the lightest. We do the chin. We phoned the prepared triangle in white and smeared it with ochre, closer to the bottom – more ochre. And a spot of gray.

Step 14

Make the second triangle. Mix the light gray scales with blue, purple and green.

Step 15

Make the next triangle as follows: peach background. On the top edge are red feathers, orange flakes in the middle, and a white spot on the right edge.

Step 16

We pass white on the back. Closer to the wing, make a blue spot.

Step 17

Make background of the wing blue and green.

Step 18

Separate an arbitrary piece at the top of the wing. Hatch from purple to black. Hatch our convex piece. It is lighter. It’s purple and black on the edge and and in the middle there’s blue and blue and white strokes.

Step 19

Next we stroke the middle part with black. Along the outlined contour of the feathers and a little add black spots on the surface of the wing.

Step 20

And then we smear everything with blue and dark green. And with the top layer we add white spots.

Step 21

On the same principle we make other feathers. On the large bottom feathers we make the outline and the place near the upper layer of feathers darker. And on the edge we make small white spots. And we make small feathers darker. And make a brown-gray shadow closer to the upper feathers.

Step 22

On the tail do a few dark purple strokes on the wing. And also along the edge of the tail.

Step 23

Let’s move on to the belly. Fondue it in orange. Make a brown-green shadow on the wing.

Step 24

We add white feathers on top of the breast. And at the bottom we make green and brown feathers.

Step 25

Paws do just orange. Hatch around the edge in red.

Step 26

And, mixing gray, black, brown, make the surface.

Step 27

That’s how bright the picture turned out. Thank you for your attention!
