Many people have asked me about the properties of acrylic paint and where to buy it. I thought then that it would be a good idea to talk more about the technology of applying it to fabric and decided to put the story in a separate thread.
Acrylic paints are water-based paints consisting of three main components: water itself, dye and acrylic emulsion. This type of paint is characterized by brightness of colors, and most importantly (if you draw on the clothes, it is important in the first place) – by resistance to aggressive conditions. Nevertheless, if you drew the fabric correctly, you don’t have to worry about it. It doesn’t flake, crumble, crumple, or crumple, and usually stays like new for a long time, because acrylic withstands extreme temperatures and mechanical stress and is not very sensitive to moisture.
The fixation of the paint on the fabric and the acquisition of the properties described above occurs as follows: when exposed to air, the aqueous base begins to gradually evaporate, leaving only the pigment on the surface and the elastic acrylic polymer that holds it in place. Obviously, the thinner the layer of paint applied, the faster it dries, so it will be faster and better to make several “light” transitions in one area than to apply one thick layer and wait for long hours.
Now directly about the technology of application and the necessary minimums. Since the topic of t-shirts has been raised in recent days, let’s continue. To begin with, you need to choose a simple T-shirt on which the picture will be applied, and then decide on the type of paint: if you want to apply the image on a stencil, it is more convenient to use spray cans, because they will help create a more even layer.
And if someone decides to draw directly on the fabric, it is better to pay attention to brushes of different sizes, acrylic paints in tubes or cans, as well as diluent, which can not be avoided, because the thick paint can not be thin and thin enough. straight lines.
After deciding on a pattern and technique, find a well-ventilated room (this is mostly true if aerosols are used). God forbid not to breathe, and get yourself a flat surface to put on a well-stretched T-shirt. By the way, it’s best to put an unwanted piece of fabric or a large piece of paper inside to keep the paint from getting on the opposite side, or better yet, use plexiglass. If you want to cut out a stencil, I recommend that you take care to buy adhesive paper. This minimizes the risk of the stencil moving away from its intended location and making the edges of the image clearer.
Once the design is completely dry (a thin layer usually takes about the same amount of time as an acrylic), it needs to be secured with an iron (it’s hard for me to tell by temperature. … I don’t need it too hot, not just hot 🙂 Between the pattern and the soleplate is a sheet of heavy paper or fabric so you don’t accidentally ruin your work.
I hope this article will help someone)
