Sweeping thick brushstrokes across the canvas,  Ekaterina Popova (previously) emphasizes the subtle textures of home. Layers of sheets and quilts drape across a bed, sunlight streams through thin, white curtains to warm a dining room, and a short stack of books rests on a nightstand. Tinged with nostalgia, each painting welcomes the viewer into an intensely personal space.

Popova’s latest body of work, Room for You, is on view now at A Very Serious Gallery in Chicago. Rendered in pale pinks, blues, and greens in an impressionistic style, the oil paintings capture the mellow comfort of a lazy Sunday morning and the joy of a bright bouquet as if seen through bleary eyes. The dreamlike works shift from one interior to another and frame an intimate fragment of domestic life, whether half an autumn dining room or a bed with the edges cut from view.

Room for You runs through June 29. Peek into Popova’s process on Instagram.
