“Vegetation are unbelievable shops of vitality,” says photographer Tom Leighton, whose fluorescent-tinged pictures of foliage spotlight the unbelievable evening lifetime of crops in his ongoing Variegation sequence. He explores the detailed colours and textures of leaves and stems, accentuating an essential counterpart to the complicated daytime technique of photosynthesis, which creates chemical vitality and oxygen from daylight, water, and carbon dioxide. “After the solar fades, the method of photosynthesis stops and respiration begins,” he says. “Vegetation start to burn their saved sugars and breathe again in among the treasured oxygen they’ve created.”
Leighton primarily focuses on species discovered round his native Cornwall—usually in his personal backyard—and captures contrasting venation patterns, serrated edges, and a number of colours.
