About what kirigami is
Kiraimi (kirugami) is a Japanese word consisting of two words: “kiru” – cut + “kami” – printed paper. It is one of the techniques of working with a paper surface to create three-dimensional images of objects, which is to cut or add a certain image while creating a three-dimensional shape. It is Kirigami is similar to origami in that it is a form of paper art. Their main difference is the following: in origami you only fold the paper, whereas in origami you not only fold but also cut the paper.
Postcards “pop-up”, or folding cards, is the direction of kirigami. Already when you open it for the first time, the folded shape between the pages is flattened out towards volume. Very often this technique is used in children’s books, where houses with castles, entire landscapes grow as if from nowhere, turning the page. Very impressive effect!
As a rule, to create kirigami you need to understand the basic principles of such three-dimensional forms. We will talk about this in a separate article, which is dedicated to this topic.
Kishigami is a hobby for which you do not need a lot of expensive materials, but the effect that is achieved with minimal materials – a knife and paper – is amazing. Also, below you can find a number of free templates, patterns or schemes for creating kirigami locks in a pop-up card style.
