Sprawling tufts of looped, wound, and crocheted yarn sprawl throughout partitions and flooring in Vanessa Barragão’s elaborate, nature-inspired textiles. The Portuguese artist (beforehand) attracts inspiration from the textures of coral, rock swimming pools, botanicals, and the cosmos to compose expansive fiber items.
Each bit can take upwards of three weeks to finish, as Barragão and a staff of six studio assistants—together with her mom, sister, with extra crocheted contributions from her grandmothers—collaboratively knot the yarn by way of each single gap within the jute canvas to create lush, biomorphic kinds.
When you’re close to Lisbon, you could find Barragão’s work in Morphosis on the Museu das Artes de Sintra, Portugal, alongside ceramicist Catarina Nunes, which opens June 29 and runs by way of October 1. Discover extra on the artist’s web site and Instagram.
