Vanessa Filley describes a current physique of labor as “imagined cosmic map(s),” charts that join the traditions of fiber arts with the current and the artist’s personal questions of discovering one’s place on the planet. Titled Within the Delicate Meshes, the collection is comprised of sewn items that Filley likens to quilts, with stitches layered into symmetric patchworks of colour and texture. “I’m within the energetic threads that orient and join us, floor us in place and time, but tether us to our ancestral previous and future—the strains that carry us house,” she says.

Filley references artists like Lenore Tawney, Hilma af Klint, and the ladies of Gees Bend Quilters, whose practices connect with spirituality, nature, and ancestral histories. Taut threads and twists embody pressure and connection between each ends of a sew, the intricate buildings of the works as an entire, and the lengthy custom of fiber arts. “Every bit on this collection is a quilted dialog, a manner of taking the disparate questions and feeling of a given second and mingling them with inspiration from the surface world and the work of those that got here earlier than,” the artist says.

Within the Delicate Meshes was not too long ago on view at Vivid Artwork Gallery in Winnetka, and you will discover extra of the collection together with an archive of Filley’s works on her website and Instagram.
